It’s an entire week-long festival that runs from weekend to weekend during the last week of August. The tomato throwing happens smack in the middle, on the last Wednesday of August, from noon until 1pm. Always on that Wednesday. Always that single hour.
But whilst tourists flood in for that one mad hour on the Wednesday of the Festival, the locals are celebrating something much bigger.
This is their annual fiesta, and it’s been part of Buñol’s calendar for more than two centuries.

This is when the locals properly let loose. We’re talking massive street parades winding through town. Fireworks lighting up the night sky. Sideshow rides for the kids.

I’ve been to La Tomatina more than twenty times over thirty years, and I can tell you the weekend atmosphere is something special. It’s got this brilliant community vibe that you don’t always see during the busier tomato fight day itself which is jam packed with tourists.

What Happens During the Week?
The festivities don’t stop after that opening weekend. Throughout the week, there’s a packed programme of events.
You’ll find paella cooking competitions, where locals show off their culinary skills. There are concerts featuring both traditional and modern music. Cultural events celebrating the town’s history. Various competitions that get the whole community involved.
One of my favourite things I’ve witnessed over the years is the kids’ tomato fight.
They hold it in the centre of town for really small children. I’ve seen it a couple of times, and it’s absolutely hilarious watching the little ones have a go with tiny tomatoes. They take it so seriously!
Top Tip
Make sure to get out to Bunol at least two to three hours before the tomato fight is due to start to really soak up the atmosphere of the town and the local culture.
After the Big Event
Once the main tomato fight wraps up on Wednesday, the festival shifts gears a bit. The events from Wednesday through to the final weekend become much more family-orientated.
You’ll see loads of people sitting outside restaurants and cafes and on long trestle tables just in the middle of the streets, all for the point of just enjoying each other’s company. The community really comes together during this time.
The fireworks continue. The music keeps playing. But there’s a more relaxed, celebration-of-community feel to it all.
It’s less about the spectacle in the last few days of the fetstival and more about locals savouring their traditions with friends and family.
